What Your Room Says About You

isabelleyang88

Your room is your sanctuary. Chances are you spend most of your time here, and it’s not just to sleep. Especially during the time we currently live in, you probably attend school in your room, you do homework in your room, you watch Netflix in your room, you chill with friends in your room, and the list goes on. That’s why it’s no surprise that spending an extended amount of time in this one special place would make us feel more inclined to make our rooms more unique to us. We believe that rooms emulate our personalities in ways more powerful than we may realize. In fact, our rooms leave little clues that actually translate to deliberate statements we make to others about who we are. Maybe you use your room to tell someone about the music you love, or the movies you watch, or your respective culture(s), and in some cases, even the politics you believe in.

Izzy:

I can confidently say that my room completely emulates my personality. To start, I have five posters in my room with some of my favorite music artists: Clairo, Brockhampton, Tame Impala, Playboi Carti, and Frank Ocean. I also have a movie wall above my desk with my all-time favorite movies, some of which include Donnie Darko, Shutter Island, Reservoir Dogs, and Dazed and Confused. Above my desk, I also have a plethora of images that match my aesthetic. These are some of the more obvious clues in my room that represent my identity; however, I do have some other decor that have deeper meanings. For example, I have a Sasuke figurine in my room. Yes, I love anime with all my heart, but what makes this figurine special is the fact that my father bought it from me on one of my favorite trips of all time: Tokyo, Japan. I also have a bunch of random lego builds on my shelf because I loved it when I was younger, and I still love it now. I have a guitar that was given to me again by my father when I was younger as well as a ukulele; I enjoy playing both. I also have a picture in my room of me playing the piano at one of my Carnegie Hall performances. So, overall, I think that all of the deliberate items in my room show that I am a creative and musical person, who loves pop culture. Some items even bring me back to really great moments in my life.

Ari:

There are two aspects of my room that I’m absolutely obsessed with. The first is a photo wall right behind my bed. There must be at least 50 square photos. There’s some photos of my family and friends but mostly it’s a collage of photos that speak to me and make me feel happy and nostalgic. There are also some photos with inspirational quotes, since I’m a total sucker for that kind of stuff. Whenever I look at the collage/photo wall right behind my bed, I immediately get a burst of serotonin. It’s just a combination of a bunch of photos I feel describe me and represent things I like really well. Also, something I think is cool is that there’s a cloud light in the middle of the photo wall. Not only is it a great night light, but it adds a lot to the wall and gives it this ethereal theme that is carried over in the other favorite part of my room. On another wall, adjacent to the photo wall, I have a moon/star decoration setup. I have this LED moon and star light that I got from amazon. I, like many other teens, am completely obsessed with LED strip lights, but the LED sign felt more personable and I could put my own spin on it. Also on the wall are silver star mirror stickers. I think that this adds a really nice touch to the wall too! As for the rest of my room, it’s more bare and I usually blame that on the fact that I haven’t had much time to decorate, but these two aspects of my room really help put me into a calm mindset and allow me to just relax. I think that if you have a few elements of your room that you put so much thought and work into, it really transforms the mood of your room and how it makes you feel.

Natasha:

Before I redecorated my room, I absolutely hated it, however now I find so much comfort in it. Everything in my room has meaning such as the lengthy picture wall which has my favorite memories, and the little sign, “beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself,” which my mom got me. Although my life could be an absolute mess at times, my room will always be in order and clean because it is my safe place.

Liv:

I think my room reflects my personality in the best way. It’s a little bit hectic and overwhelming at first glance, but once you sit down and look around, it’s calming. My room is full of things from my childhood, pictures of me with the people I love, and things that I’ve painted too. I made all the paintings in my room, and I think my art style really shows my personality.

Reese Polk:

I think that my room represents me because it is perfectly untamed like myself. I do not try to hide my true wild self wherever I am so I think that my free spirited room perfectly represents me. I love astrology and astronomy so my posters behind my bed represent my love for the unknown universe and the movie, Interstellar. I keep my painting supplies on my desk, where I try to complete watercolor portraits whenever I get the chance. Lastly, I keep my most beloved Jordan’s on my floor because I have a love for the evolution of shoes in pop culture and how they creatively parallel with the events that surround our daily life.
